Mathematics
At Grange Park Junior School we believe that Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. In class, we explore how Mathematics is an important part of everyday life, such as money, time, weight and measure, using hands-on activities and examples.
We want all children to have the opportunity to enjoy mathematics and study it with confidence and a sense of achievement. They are encouraged to apply their mathematical skills and knowledge to practical, problem-solving and investigative tasks and activities. This promotes their thinking skills and challenges them to apply the maths they have learnt, to draw links between different aspects of their learning and to consider alternative solutions.
Children are also encouraged to work collaboratively, sharing ideas with a partner or group and discussing their results, recording these in written, oral or pictorial form.
At Grange Park Junior we teach mathematics using Maths Mastery, the Singapore Maths Scheme and resources from the national organisation, NCETM. This mastery approach enables our pupils to build a deep understanding of concepts which allow them to apply their learning in different situations.
