Art

At Grange Park Junior School, we believe that art is all around us - if we know how to look. Throughout their time here, children will learn to look, appreciate and create art by discussing the seven elements of art – line, colour, texture, shape, form, space and value.

We encourage the children to explore, discover and analyse art through a range of media including painting, clay, sculpture, drawing, printing, textiles and collage.  We endeavour to develop children’s keen powers of observation, concentration and critical skills which are fundamental to the appreciation of art. By linking their art skills to other subjects such as English, maths, science and topic, we create a fun and memorable way for children to learn new skills.

Children are encouraged to gather initial ideas whilst looking at how other artists might have solved the problem presented to them. They are then taught the necessary skills before embarking on their own exploration of the media, gaining an understanding of the potential and limitations of each media they work with.

In their sketchbooks, as well as on paper and materials of different sizes, children are able to develop their ideas.  We often run creative competitions as well as have an ‘Artists in Residence’ programme after school where our keenest pupils flex their creative talents.

By the end of their time at Grange Park Junior School, we wish for our pupils to have an appreciation for art, to describe art using its elements, to experiment and use proficiently different media, design and create their own work of art.

Pupils will also understand how art and design both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and artistic wealth of our country.
