History
At Grange Park Junior School, history is taught through the termly topic so that our children can make links that enable a deeper learning. History is a way to inspire pupils' curiosity about the past. It creates opportunities for children to develop their skills of enquiry and questioning and explore the past in an exciting and engaging way.
History enables pupils to develop their knowledge of the people and events that shaped the past and therefore help them to understand the present. Through history our pupils learn to link and make comparisons between historical periods and modern times and consider how and why things have changed.
We teach the periods of history chronologically, from the Dinosaurs through to 1066. We cover the ancient civilisations of The Mayans, The Greeks and The Egyptians. In Year 6 our pupils study ‘World War Two – The London Story’ which enables them to focus on an aspect of history from a local perspective.
Using questions as a starting point we give our pupils opportunities to explore the past through a variety of sources of information in order to find clues and evidence and discuss their ideas to form conclusions to their research. We try to provide first hand experiences through role play, historical visits, museums and interactive workshops.
